Throughout the novel and especially towards to very end, Holden seems to relate very well with his younger sister Phoebe. He always talks well of her and seems to somewhat admire her for being a good child. Phoebe seems to be able to relate and figure out Holden. This is evident in their meeting in Phoebe's room. Phoebe understands Holden's depression and life and wants to try to help him. I think it is very interesting that they have sort of a bond. Holden does not seem to be able to relate to very many people but Phoebe is one of the very few in the book. This shows Holden's soft spot for younger children. His treatment of children is sort of sentimental to who he is and what kind of person he is. Although Holden did not have to many close friends or was he close to his parents, he could relate to his siblings. Although D.B. and Allie were not in the book, I got a sense that Holden had a sense of respect for them and they were rather close to each other. In the novel, Holden had other friends but generally they did not relate that well and they usually had disagreements. His friend Sally can be taken as an example as her and Holden met up to go to a play and were in very good spirits but ended up fighting towards to end of there "date." Phoebe was very glad to see Holden when he came, but she was quick to note that he was early. He was supposed to return home on a Wednesday and instead he should up on Sunday night. She knew right away that something was a miss and she asked if he had been kicked out of Pency. She was real mad at him and would not talk to him for a while probably because she was really disappointed and did not want to see her brother do poorly and fight with their parents. She however talked to him after a little while and was nice enough to give him some of her Christmas money. I thought this was real telling because she wanted to best for him and would do anything. The next day Holden decided he wanted to move west. Before he left, though, he wanted to say good-bye to Phoebe. He didn't want to say good-bye to anyone else including his parents. Allie was deceased and D.B. was in Hollywood. He brought a note to her school telling her to meet him at the Museum. Phoebe showed up with a suit case, which shows her love and devotion to Holden. If he went west, she wanted to be with him. I think that is the reason why Holden didn't leave right there because he was too attached to Phoebe and would feel bad to leave her back in New York. Holden also admired Allie a lot for he was successful and a good person. Holden talked about Allie numerous times in the story and really missed him. He would talk to Allie in tough times and really admired what he did when he was living. He also looked up to D.B. because he was very successful and working in Hollywood. D.B. was mention a couple of different time throughout the novel and Holden seemed to respect what he had done a lot.
I could relate to this part of the story very well because I am one of four children. I get along with my siblings very well. I have an older sister, a younger brother, and younger sister. I am the closest with my younger brother Andrew. We sort of share to same bond as Holden and Phoebe. We understand and can relate to each other very well. I have a lot of respect for him and he looks up to me. I think that sibling relationships are very special because your friends come and go, but your siblings are your flesh and blood. I think that is why Holden could relate to his siblings better than others. I realize that I am going to be with them a lot of my life and that I am better off being close to them. My mother is very close to one of her sisters and I admire the fact that they are so close even though they don't see each other that often. They understand each other very good. When you live with someone for an extended period of time, you know their habits and tendency. I can sometimes tell what my brother and sisters are thinking. I think it is very special to have a bond with siblings because you can be so close and have somebody to talk to in tough and good times.
